Laboratory Testing Services
Microbiology
Microbiology is the study of disease-causing microorganisms in the body’s tissues and fluids, such as urine and sputum. Since microorganisms cannot be seen with the eye alone, the lab examines samples of tissue and fluids under a microscope to detect disease.
Immunology
Immunology is the study of the body’s immune system. Allergy tests are examples of immunological analyses.
Hematology
Hematology is the study of blood and diseases of the blood. For example, a white blood cell count can indicate there is an infection, and red blood cell counts and hematocrit can identify anemia.
Serology
Serology is the study of blood serum – the clear fluid part of the blood. Serology helps diagnose certain bacterial, parasitic, and viral diseases. Serology tests also help identify autoimmune diseases (diseases that cause your body to attack itself).
Transfusion Services
To ensure safe transfusions, the lab:
- Collects blood and sends it to the Kenya National Blood Transfusion and Transplant Service’s Regional Blood
Transfusion Centers are to be tested for safety. - Maintains the tested blood that we obtain from the Regional Blood Transfusion Centers.
- Determines blood group types and performs crossmatching on St. Anne Mission Hospital patients who are to receive transfusions. This is done to ensure that the patients receive the correct type of blood.
